We can take small steps to ensure everyone can access postings in both our personal and professional worlds. \nThis session will give you hands on experience in creating accessible posts across Facebook\, Instagram and Twitter. We will cover alternative text\, camel case\, simple language use\, and perspectives from the vision loss community. \n#DiscoverAccess \nWORKING SESSION\nThis will be a working session in which we will ask you to try the concepts we are discussing for yourself and receive feedback from users and the group. Participants will be asked to use their own social media and take photos at the Bell Museum in order to practice the concepts discussed. Please be sure to bring your phone\, computer or tablet in order to get the most out of this session. \nWe encourage you to join us after the training from 5-6 pm for a networking hour with coffee\, tea\, water\, and light snacks. \nACCESSIBILITY\nTRAINING/PRESENTATION ACCOMMODATIONS\nAssisted listening devices (ALD) will be provided. The 2nd floor can be accessed via elevator or stairs. Free wheelchairs and walkers are available for use at any time during your visit to the museum. Working guide and service animals are always welcome at the Bell Museum. For the safety of service animals and our visitors\, comfort animals are only allowed if they are needed to perform a task that will or could be needed during a visit to the museum. \nAccessible parking spaces are available close to the main building entrance. There is also a drop off area near the main entrance (before entering the parking lot). Bathrooms with accessible stalls can be found on both floors of the museum. On the main floor is a gender neutral bathroom that also has an adult lift table. The museum also has a Quiet Room—a dedicated\, single-use space available for families and individuals with sensory-sensitivities\, parents with infants\, as well as a private space for prayer or meditation. \nAdditional venue specific access information can be found on the access page of the Bell Museum website. \nAccessibility \n \nLOCATION\, PARKING\, AND OTHER\nPARKING \, BUS\, AND LIGHT RAIL\nParking\nPaid surface lot parking\, managed by UMN Parking & Transportation Services\, is available with an entrance off of Larpenteur Ave. Accessible parking spaces are available close to the main building entrance. The daily rate is $5. Note: The parking fee is waived for any vehicle in the lot under 10 minutes. \nMetro Mobility or Other Ride Services\nThe main entrance is fully accessible from the parking lot. A drop off and pick up area is available near the building entrance\, before entering through the pay stations. \nBus\nMetro Transit’s Route 61 runs between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul\, and stops near the museum on Larpenteur Ave & Coffman St. Bus route frequency varies between 30 minutes – one hour; no service on Sundays. Visit Metro Transit to plan your trip. \nThe University provides FREE shuttle service around campus. The St. Paul Circulator (M-F\, 7am – 6pm\, every 15 minutes) also stops at the museum drop off area near the main entrance. It is about a 10 minute ride from most of the stops near the center of the St. Paul campus. \nBiking\nIf the parking lot is full\, an attendant will be on site to direct you to nearby parking alternatives. Bike racks are available on two sides of the museum site: north\, near the main entrance/Larpenteur Ave and south\, near the recreation fields/Cleveland Ave. See the St. Paul campus biking map for more details once you are on campus. \n  \nALTERNATIVE TRAINING ATTENDANCE OPTIONS\nThis training will be available in three different formats. The first is the facilitated remote session at the Bell Museum in St. Paul\, MN. This event is for the facilitated remote session. SUMMARY:American Sign Language (ASL) for Cultural Workers
DESCRIPTION:“American Sign Language (ASL) for Cultural Workers” was a fun and interactive workshop led by Regina Daniels\, program director and lead American Sign Language instructor in the Carlstrom Interpreter Training Program based at North Central University in Minneapolis. Participants learned about Deaf Culture\, ASL signs\, and practical tips for welcoming Deaf and hard of hearing visitors to their cultural institutions. \nRegina Daniels is a full-time Program Director and Assistant Professor at North Central University in Minneapolis. As the program director and lead American Sign Language instructor in the Carlstrom Interpreter Training Program based at NCU\, she thrives on developing creative\, challenging yet fun methods of language instruction. She enjoys teaching students about sign language interpreting from a deaf person’s perspective and helping them develop language competency. Prior to working at NCU\, she taught ASL at Columbia College Chicago\, where she also began working in the ASL/English Interpretation Department. She holds an M.A. in Performance Arts Management and is currently working toward her Ph.D. from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. Regina is passionate about dance\, theater and teaching ASL. \nCouldn’t make it to the in person session in Minneapolis? No problem! SUMMARY:Accessible Programs & Services for Visitors who are Blind or Low Vision
DESCRIPTION:This session aimed to help cultural organizations think about how to provide or enhance programming for people who are blind or have low vision.  \nParticipants took a closer look at how various types of cultural organizations approach providing verbal and audio descriptions\, staff training and additional support materials. Patrons who use these services provided personal stories and the update on the national certification standards being developed for audio description. SUMMARY:Welcoming All: Accessibility Design for Festival Settings\, Saint Peter
DESCRIPTION:Create a festival environment that actively welcomes\, supports\, and engages individuals of all abilities! \nExplore how the elements of accessibility and inclusion can be applied to festival settings through the stages of planning\, design\, and implementation. This workshop will provide an overview of disability awareness and highlight many of the successful frameworks of accessibility and inclusion. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to consider a wide range of topics including: \n\ndesign and construction\nstructure and implementation of accessibility services\ncommunity outreach\nutilizing volunteers\npreserving the priority and integrity of your accessibility vision while collaborating with internal and external agencies\n\nGain tangible strategies and resources for your organization no matter where you are starting on your journey of inclusion. \nPresenter: Diane Nutting\n\nWorking as a consultant at the intersections of disability\, arts\, and education\, Diane provides training\, project coordination\, and strategic planning services for a wide range of cultural arts institutions as well as state and local arts agencies including recent collaborations with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, the High Museum of Art\, Ford’s Theatre\, and the United States Botanic Garden. Since 2016 she has worked with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to serve as the Accessibility Coordinator for the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the grounds of the National Mall\, as well as other festival partnerships and events across the Smithsonian campus. \nCouldn’t make it to the in person session? Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, the High Museum of Art\, Ford’s Theatre\, and the United States Botanic Garden. Since 2016 she has worked with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to serve as the Accessibility Coordinator for the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the grounds of the National Mall\, as well as other festival partnerships and events across the Smithsonian campus. \nCouldn’t make it to the in person session? What is this phenomenon? What is the evidence of impact for individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities as well as the general public? What are the new sensory friendly initiatives for the future? Come learn about arts access for persons with diverse sensory and cognitive abilities. \nPhoto of Roger Ideishi\nPresented by  Roger Ideishi\, Program Director and Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy\, Temple University\, Philadelphia\, PA. Throughout his career\, Roger has worked to provide community access and opportunity for children with diverse sensory and cognitive abilities. He advises community organizations on building meaningful learning experiences for children and their families. He has worked with organizations including the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and the Smithsonian Institution (Washington\, DC) and presented his work in regional\, national\, and international venues. He and his students have collaborated with various organizations to serve vital community interests resulting in the creation of outdoor play spaces\, learning gardens\, community mosaic murals\, and movement/arts-based curricula to enhance the quality of life for children and families.

Sherry is the co-founder of Arts Access For All\, a consortium that began in 2015 in the Moorhead/Fargo Metro region to bring together Arts and cultural leaders\, staff\, volunteers\, community-based organizations\, and people with disabilities to discuss ways to implement accommodations one step at a time. \nTopics include: \n\nLearn how to reach out and welcome people with disabilities into your Arts or Cultural organization   \nLearn some simple solutions to provide access and accommodations for people with disabilities\nLearn where to find resources and what other organisations have done to implement accessibility\nExamine your facility by using an ADA survey checklist and meet experts in the field that can help facilitate these surveys\nBecome a part of a larger community That is passionate and supports one another\, shares information by in-person workshops\, email discussion lists and Facebook groups.\nJoin together with arts leaders\, program and education staff\, docents and volunteers from a variety of community-based organizations\, theaters\, cultural centers\, and museums\n\nFacilities and parking are wheelchair accessible. DESCRIPTION:Arts Access For All Partners with Minnesota Access Alliance: A shared vision for full inclusion in the Arts \nSponsored by Minnesota State Arts Board \nWe are thrilled to offer two educational sessions on disability and the arts this spring in East Grand Forks and Fergus Falls!     \nJoin us for an opportunity to learn how to plan the implementation of accommodating people with various disabilities when visiting your museum\, theater\, cultural organization and events. This training is one of many that have taken place since 2015 as we continue bringing information and resources to the community. \nFacilitator: Sherry Shirek who  is a passionate advocate with over 25 years of experience working in the field of disability. Sherry is the co-founder of Arts Access For All\, a consortium that began in 2015 in the Moorhead/Fargo Metro region to bring together Arts and cultural leaders\, staff\, volunteers\, community-based organizations\, and people with disabilities to discuss ways to implement accommodations one step at a time. \nTopics include: \n\nLearn how to reach out and welcome people with disabilities into your Arts or Cultural organization   \nLearn some simple solutions to provide access and accommodations for people with disabilities\nLearn where to find resources and what other organisations have done to implement accessibility\nExamine your facility by using an ADA survey checklist and meet experts in the field that can help facilitate these surveys\nBecome a part of a larger community That is passionate and supports one another\, shares information by in-person workshops\, email discussion lists and Facebook groups.\nJoin together with arts leaders\, program and education staff\, docents and volunteers from a variety of community-based organizations\, theaters\, cultural centers\, and museums\n\nRegistration required. SUMMARY:Introduction to Captioning
DESCRIPTION:Participants had an opportunity to learn about captioning from two prolific service providers in the Twin Cities who shared options for captioning live events and web videos via Open Captioning (seen by everyone on a digital LED unit\, projections\, supertitles\, etc.) or Closed Captioning (seen only by the user on devices such as smartphones). \nPresenters:\n \nLisa Richardson (RPR\, CRR\, CBC\, CCP) is Vice President of CART and Captioning Services for Paradigm Reporting & Captioning\, Inc.\, based in Minneapolis. She was the first person in Minnesota to provide broadcast captioning (1988) and CART captioning services (1990).  Lisa has provided CART and captioning services for a wide variety of people and venues\, including the Dalai Lama\, President Obama\, Vice President Biden\, Neil deGrasse Tyson\, Gopher football games\, MNUFC soccer team\, Minnesota Wild\, Minnesota Timberwolves\, Guthrie Theater\, Minnesota Orchestra\, Minnesota Fringe Festival\, Ordway and more. \n  \nHunter Gullickson is Accessibility Manager at the Guthrie Theater\, where he spearheads access programs such as American Sign Language interpretation\, audio description\, open captioning\, Braille publications and the T.O.P. financial access initiative.  He also looks beyond the performance experience\, striving to ensure that the Guthrie facility is welcoming to people of all abilities. Hunter’s influence reaches many local arts organizations by providing access equipment and consultations.
